Carrying the Torch of Knowledge on Low Thyroid Levels
June 30, 2011
To focus on your needs: you are confounded by the large number of symptoms, (some authors list more than 40). Where did all of this premature aging come from? What has happened to my brain and its old sharpness? Can’t sleep and just can’t get past 3pm without some stimulant. (The thyroid turns down around 3pm) Then I am always adjusting the heat warmer when others are comfortable. Summer heat really gets to me. Like so many, I can’t lose weight even after stringent diet and exercise programs. On and on go the symptoms.
Yes that can all be caused by low thyroid levels, if you have been diagnosed by a blood test that is not really all that it’s supposed to be. (You have probably been in fair to poor health for 15 years till the diagnosis has been found) Well great, but some of you searching this subject have normal levels of thyroid and must search on.
Home testing is easy for low thyroid levels. Remember your metabolic rate goes down. Well your morning temps will be low. So test them with a good thermometer (Geri-derm sold at most drug stores) Take an average number of temps, say 6 and get the general average of them. If they are below 97 degrees and you are loaded with symptoms listed above, you most likely have low thyroid. In women, the temps should start on day 3 of flow. All the rest is the same.
This gave me a pause. I have repeated it many times. Give it a read and see what it imparts.
When you look at the Greek torch of knowledge much can be learned. When the torch is held high, it lights for miles the darkness that is lack of knowledge. Many can see the flame and admire its illumination. But what is seldom told is “remember it casts a shadow of darkness on the holder” Yep this means unless you know this you can be blinded by what you think you know and be kept from further learning.
The Torch Story? To illustrate a point. All the smoke and mirrors around blood testing obscures the fact that the test doesn’t tell enough to solve the problems of the hypothyroid patient. You need to know this. Assuming you are the sick one, this knowledge is even more important if you are going to get well.
How could a very technical lab test costing in the neighborhood of $200 USD be less useful than a home temp test? Well it is evaluating on a small part of the picture. The temp test evaluates a much larger portion of the problem.
Part of working in any system long enough is learning what works for sure, what works sometimes and what doesn’t work even though it says it is working. This is the problem with blood testing (the TSH, T4,T3). You can get normals and still have a floundering patient. Give them some thyroid and Iodine and see what happens. It is done every day with many medications and in many complex problems.
