How To Find An Online Personal Trainer
July 31, 2011
So you’ve decided to finally get off your bum to join the neighbourhood gym. You enter the gym and you don’t know where or how to get started. Which machine to use? How many sets should I do? What does this machine even do for me? What if I injure myself, or worse, the weights fall on me? This is when you should get a personal trainer. There are a few walking around, so which one shall I call for help? Of course you’re inclined to call out to the best looking one but wait, you’re here to work out, not secure a date with the beefy man or the little slim chick.
After you have looked through the many online personal training services, and taken advantage of their many free sample downloads, your choice should be based on a few simple criteria. First of all, what environment are you going to be training in? Do you have the technology that your online trainer requires? (video iPod for some, streaming video for others, or simply an mp3 player). Are you a visual or an audio learner? Perhaps you’re a hands-on, tactile person that needs to be shown exactly what to do, and how it is supposed to feel. Bear these things in mind when you are shopping for an online personal trainer, as some services are only audio based, while some offer diagrams, charts and written explanations of exercises. How about video quality? It’s nice to get neat new exercises from your online trainer, but how clear is the explanation of what it is you’re doing? How are the exercises cued? Can you understand, learn, and most importantly apply what you are learning? Are you motivated by the tone and enthusiasm of the online personal trainer?
1. He/she is leaning against the machines chatting with a client
- The trainer and the client are laughing happily and slapping each other’s backs. If you don’t think that the personal trainer is discussing the workout regimen with the client looking at the body languages of both of them, most likely they are not. A good personal trainer would not distract the client with unnecessary banter but keep the client focused instead.
Lastly, as with all technological advances, test the system to make sure it actually works! Try a free download or two. Not just sitting in front of your computer, but in the field. Does it work for you? Can you see yourself getting fired up for more of the same? Is this a tool that you are going to utilize, or is going to be like the treadmill in the basement that has become the most expensive clothes hanger you ever purchased?!
3. He/she pushes the clients when it’s clear that they are beyond their limits
- You see a sweet young thing struggling with her weights and yet her trainer is still urging her on. You don’t want that to happen to you, do you?
4. He/she does not correct the client
- Even if you have no background in personal training, you know that the woman’s posture doesn’t look right, yet the personal trainer lets her be but continues chatting with her instead.
5. He/she spends a lot of time on their phones
- Enough said.
While there are things that you would only know once you have started the personal training itself, you could at least weed out some trainers first by observing the above.
